Contemporary Show Room

From April 25 to May 21 2022

in Berlin, Germany Friedrichstraße 69, 10117

In addition to our current exhibition "999 by GAMA" in the gallery probst, we will present our ifungiclub  - an art and environmental project - in the Contemporary Show Room. The heart of the  ifungiclub is a collection of 999 digitally hand-drawn individual mushroom motifs, which the artist GAMA has deposited as NFT's on the Ethereum blockchain. With this project, the ifungiclub would like to draw attention to the global reduction in biodiversity and other environmental problems.

The Amur leopard (Panthera pardus orientalis) is a subspecies of leopard formerly native to northeastern China, northern Korea, and the southwestern Russian region of Primorye. Since 1996, the Amur leopard has been on the IUNC red list. In 2007, there were only 14-20 adults and 5-6 cubs left in the wild. Outside Russia, the species was extinct. Through efforts of animal conservationists and following the designation of large protected areas in Russia, the Amur leopard population has since recovered somewhat. As of mid-2015, the population in Russia and China was estimated at 86 wild specimens. This means that the population of the Amur leopard in the wild has more than quadrupled since 2007.

In this mushroom hat, the issue around the polar bears is addressed. The melting of the poles leads to the fact that the habitat of polar bears is becoming smaller and smaller. The polar bears belong to the species that are exposed to extreme changes in their natural habitat due to global warming and are therefore particularly endangered. This is because the unnaturally rapidly rising temperatures caused by the emission of greenhouse gases are causing more and more Arctic ice to melt. As a result, the polar bear's habitat is shrinking dramatically. Its hunt for seals is becoming more difficult - in its search for food, it is magically attracted to the garbage dumps of human settlements.

In Gama's oeuvre one sees red mushrooms again and again. This mushroom stands for the connection to his analogous works. The mushroom symbolizes the Buddhist belief in rebirth. But also Gama's deep connection to nature and his concern for your condition.

In purple, the earthly red unites with the heavenly blue and becomes the epitome of the mystically mysterious, just as much in the shamanistically influenced Mogolian Buddhism.

The fur of the snow leopard has been used for centuries as clothing, wall hangings or trophies. Even today, the skull bones, teeth, claws as well as the genitals of the animals are traded. The body parts are also used in ritual ceremonies in parts of China. In addition, its habitat in the high altitudes of the Himalayas is highly endangered. Human encroachment into ever higher elevations is reducing its migratory range.

Our oceans are sinking more and more into garbage. Today, several hundred thousand pieces of microplastic and plastic waste float in every square kilometer of ocean. Sea turtles, like the real hawksbill turtle pictured in the mushroom head, have been found with plastic straws in their noses. In the Pacific alone, there are plastic whirlpools four times larger than Germany.

The biggest enemy of the rhinos is humans. Poaching and habitat loss are the main causes of the dramatic population decline. The reason for poaching is high demand from Asia for the horn of these primeval animals.

Especially the two African species are affected by massive poaching. More than 9,000 animals have been poached in the past 10 years. And this has had a devastating impact: Southern white rhino populations have been falling since 2012 - and that's after the species was narrowly saved from extinction only at the beginning of the last century.

The number of black rhinos threatened with extinction is currently still growing, but at a much slower rate than before the wave of poaching began. There are only about 5,500 of them left - so every animal lost weighs heavily.

Tigers have been in high demand for use in Traditional Asian Medicine, especially in China, for more than 1,000 years. Healing powers are attributed to nearly all parts of the body. Even though worldwide bans on hunting, trade and use should better protect tiger populations, superstition about their healing powers lives on. High prices on the international and especially Asian black markets entice poachers to hunt tigers. The black market price in China for a kilogram of tiger bone in 2005/06 was over $6,500 per kilogram. In addition, the skins of the rare Amur tigers are highly sought after as prestige objects by wealthy Russians, who pay US$10-20,000 for them, depending on size. The poacher gangs are in most cases mafia-like organized.

This mushroom shows an oil slick on the water. Oil pollution of the oceans is one of the most conspicuous forms of environmental damage in the sea. Oil enters the water not only as a result of spectacular accidents involving tankers or on drilling platforms, but above all from diffuse sources - from leaks during oil production, from illegal ship tank cleaning at sea or via rivers. Measures such as the designation of marine protected areas, increased controls or the use of double-hulled tankers are now being used to try to contain oil pollution.

The "perpetual ice" is melting at an impressive rate. For example, the air in the Arctic is warming more than twice as fast as anywhere else on the planet. In 2021, A76, currently the world's largest iceberg at 4320 square kilometers (Mallorca is 700 square kilometers smaller), broke away in Antarctica. In 2017, A68 was even larger at 6,000 square kilometers; the record is currently held by B15, a table iceberg measuring around 11,000 square kilometers that broke away from the Ross Ice Shelf in 2000.
